Review by hotel critic
As an environmental scientist with a soft spot for marine conservation, I had the opportunity to stay at the Gertrude Hotel Self Check-In, and my experience was quite telling in the luxury versus value debate. First impressions matter, and the room was spacious-definitely a plus for those of us who like to move around a bit. The hotel prides itself on being 'green,' so I appreciated that daily cleaning isn't mandatory. The tea and coffee facilities were a nice touch, allowing you to enjoy a warm drink in the coziness of your room. The breakfast spread was commendable in terms of variety-everything from oatmeal porridge to scrambled eggs. The layout made it challenging to balance a tray while filling up. Personally, I found the porridge bland and my companion shared a similar sentiment about the potato pancakes. The location is ideal, nestled in the city center, but do take note: street noise can disrupt your sleep. On my stay, an early check-in option was a bonus. For a deposit of 50 EUR for the mini-bar, you'll reclaim it at checkout, which I found slightly unorthodox but harmless. The Gertrude Hotel offers solid value, particularly for a few nights, but it lacks a bit in the luxury department.
